Me and my long-term girlfriend have been thinking of getting a dog for awhile and as time goes by we are taking for a more and more steps towards getting one. The big question is do we adopt a rescue or go and get a puppy from a local breeder (of course we would make a point of making sure we aren't supporting some mass puppy farm and we would only want to support a ethical breeder). I have grown up with dogs from a young age however my girlfriend has never had a pet but has a insane love for all dogs.
As this would be our first pet together. I was wondering would it be wiser to get a puppy or a rescue. Obviously we love the idea of a puppy and watch them grow up and be able to train them from a pup. However, we both always say how horrible it is, how many dogs are out there that need a home.
Could any seasoned doggo owners help us decide on either getting a rescue or a puppy based on the idea that this would be our first dog together?
