Sorry if I start rambling a little bit but it's been pretty rough over the last two days. I made the decision yesterday to have my cat of 18 years put down. Last time she was in for a check up, she'd lost a significant amount of weight (started at 7lbs, was then 5.5lbs) and the very noted during his tests that her kidneys were showing signs of slowing down. Fast forward to least month, she was defecating all over the house and was having constant diarrhea. The vet sent me home with some antibiotics to clear up a clostridium infection and to weeks later she seemed a bit better. But that only lasted about a day before the diarrhea was back again and she was soiling the house again. I regret waiting the extra time, but when I brought her in on Tuesday she was dehydrated and down to 4.8 lbs. She's looked miserable over the last few weeks and can't seem to get comfortable when she tries to lay down. I haven't seen her run, play with toys, or groom anything but her butt in weeks. The vet said that while they could probably help with meds, but her kidneys are probably just about done, and there's a rash of other problems with it.
I'm struggling because if I wander over she still looks for attention for a little while and it's eating and drinking, even if it isn't much. But she looks like she is hurting and uncomfortable and I would rather let her go peacefully before everything goes completely wrong than subject her 18 year old self to a lifetime of vet visits and meds that won't really fix the underlying issue.
It's really hard because as I you're this she's having a good moment, and it's happily kneading away at my leg at the end of the bed.
