I know this seems weird but I sometimes just feel the need to express to my kitty cat that I love her. You see I came from a physically and emotionally abusive home and showing affection to each other was totally off the table. I had to tell the parents that "I loved them" even though I did not. Same with pretty much anyone else in my toxic family. Anyways, this has kinda fucked me up because I don't know what to do to express emotions or feelings (other than negative ones which involve a lot of yelling and hitting) and I don't want to be that person to my cat. I read about head butts and face smashes but I don't get any of those. My cat likes being around me and from what I've read I think she somewhat trusts me since I get to pet her belly without any resistance. When I come home we have to do belly flops and motor purrs and that usually ends when I dump food into her dish and top off or refresh her water for the night. After she eats she takes off and goes to do kitty cat things that I am not privied to nor invited to. She'll come back later that night with the latest mouse in her mouth (and I can tell she has one since the 'meow' comes out more like a 'mmmmrow'). I tell her I love her and appreciate her but take your friend outside since I don't want it in my (tiny)house. Anyways, I try to do the slow blink thing with her when she's looking at me but I don't know if she gets it or not. Here lately now that fall is starting to creep in, she'll wake me up at oh-god-thirty in the morning trying to mush her way under the covers. She does this by mashing her face into my head and it wakes me up enough that I'll pick up the covers and she'll head down to my outstretched arm and promptly curl up. Back to sleep I'll go (I have insomnia) and we'll doze for a few more hours until she wants to be fed at which time she starts pacing up and down me.
I'm saying all of this since I've never had a cat before and I really don't know what to expect behavior-wise from her. I've always raised dogs and they're a lot different! I do roll her around and play with her like she's a dog, she likes nipping at me when I put my finger on her back legs. So reddit, how am I doing as a "cat maintainer" ? Any words of wisdom from anyone?
