Advice on Bathing cat

My 12 year old cat I adopted last year is a sweetheart but FREAKS out when I've tried to give him a bath. I mean full on spazz attack, screaming like someone is trying to kill him. He's super grungy though and even though he enjoys being brushed the dry shampoo and brush can only do so much. I got a quote from a lady that does in home grooming with great reviews and is fine with handling cats like him but she costs over $200 for one bath.... I also don't feel comfortable taking him somewhere to be groomed because I don't want him to hurt himself/anyone else while he freaks out. Whoever had him before me had his front paws declawed (so sad) but he still has sharp teeth and back claws lol. Anybody else every dealt with this? I just think he needs one good bath to really get clean then he'll be good to maintain with the brushing and dry shampoo. I'm thinking he might need some type of kitty xanax or something to give him before hand so I might call his vet and ask about it but even that makes me a little nervous.
