Advice regarding pet insurance and supporting my pets financially in the future

We recently had to put down our 9 year old boy kitty two weeks ago. For months, he was losing weight and we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. We had him checked at a animal hospital in October and the vet felt lumps in his gut and suggested that it was lymphoma. We couldn't afford a PET scan or ultrasound because we didn't have pet insurance in NY, so we couldn't official confirm if it was lymphoma or not. The vet said, at the rate he was going, he had a couple of weeks to live. We fought to keep him alive until midway through this month.

Since the unofficial prognoses, I convinced myself that I will never personally adopt an animal unless I have pet insurance or some kind of fund to support them in the case of emergencies. I don't see myself living in NY for too long after college. It's super expensive to live in and most of the jobs in my industry (video game industry) are not in my state but on the other side of the country like California and Washington. I honestly don't know where I'll be in the future.

I know I'm thinking too far ahead, but can you guys give me any tips on pet insurance and how to support my furballs in the case of emergencies?
