Hi everyone, happy holidays!
Hoping someone can help me with my poor doggie, Benji. I adopted my Maltese mix from an animal shelter this March and things were going great until this happened. I left Benji to go grocery shopping but when I came home, Benji was limping and refused to put any pressure on his right hind leg.
I took him to see 3 veterinarians. The first vet gave him an injection of pain killer and prescribed meloxicam. I limited Benji's physical activities. He was getting noticeably better throughout the week; he started to put pressure on the leg albeit we were only taking short walks.
On day 6, Benji's condition worsen abruptly (my dad gave him a shower that day, not sure if it's relevant information). He was again limping and refused to put pressure on his leg. He was in obvious pain, so I took him to see another vet (the first vet was closed that day). The second veterinarian took Benji to the back of the office and looked at him, but found no physical injuries. We were able to touch his leg without any yelping. She suggested getting xrays which I did, but the xrays showed no findings (see attached). She sent Benji home with more meloxicam at a lower dose. Benji was no longer in pain, the limping persisted, but he was using his leg.
Another couple of weeks past, again suddenly, Benji refused to use his leg at all (It was cold outside that day when I walked him, not sure if it's relevant information). This time, he didn't want to walk, stayed in his bed, and yelped a few times when I touch his leg. Most of the times, he was okay with me touching this leg. I took him to see the third veterinarian (from the same office as the first time). He did not know what the cause is and did not provide a concrete answer. He suggested to give Benji a corticosteroid injection and more pain killers to see if it works which I refused. I brought Benji back home to rest instead.
Fast forward a month later, today, Benji is no longer in pain. He eats fine and loves walks, but he only uses 3 legs now. I've seen him walking on all fours when walking slowly. I love Benji very much and it pains me to see him like this. Should I take him to another vet? Should I go back and get the corticosteroid injection? I am not quite sure what to do at this moment, so any advice or recommendations that can point us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
Also has anyone experienced anything similar with their dogs?
