Cat or Kitten for an adult cats friend?

Long story short almost seven years ago I rescued two kittens within a few months of each other from my shelter, a boy and girl, they absolutely loved eachother and grew up with eachother so it was easy back then. My boy died this week suddenly and I don't want my girl to be alone. My girl is highly affectionate with me (personality more akin to a dog than cat) but loved the company of another cat to play with and cuddle to sleep. I also now have a two year old son so I'm home all the time and he doesn't bother them, we also have a large baby wall gate blocking the living area from the rest of the house to give my cats, well I guess now cat the ability to be alone when she likes. I'm in two minds about getting her and I a new friend, an older cat with a established friendly personality but my girl may find harder to bond with, or a kitten who maybe more likely chance she and it will bond maybe? I'd be adopting from my local animal shelter which has anything from 9 week old kittens to 11 year old cats currently. I have trouble NOT adopting every animal I see so I want to be able to go to the office and list exactly what I'm after so they only show me one cat because if I see them all I'll spend the whole time crying that I can't help all of them.
