We have an adopted cat named Morty. He’s a little over a year old. We’ve had him for 2 months now and he’s great. We love him! No real issues. He’s litter box trained and generally listens to our commands.
Yesterday, some children knocked on our door because their ball flew into our backyard. My husband was heading towards the back door and I scooped up Morty to bring him outside with us. My intention was to hold him the entire time.
Morty hasn’t been outside since we have adopted him. The shelter DID tell us that he was an indoor/outdoor cat with at least one of his previous owners. They also told us that Morty was shifted around a lot because people did not like his excessive meowing.
We do have a dog and when we let our dog out, Morty will be a little interested and go near the door, but he’s never tried to run away and if he gets too close, we’ll just nudge him back.
Again - I was planning on holding him the entire time, but just wanted to see how he’d react to actually being out in the fresh air.
So yesterday, I picked him up as my husband was heading out the back door. As I stepped outside, he started trying to move out of my arms. I thought for a few seconds he was trying to escape to run away, so I started turning back around towards the house.
Then I heard what I thought was dripping water. Looked around for a leak and shortly realized that Morty was peeing and it was falling to the ground. Luckily enough, I was holding him a bit away from me, and if anything it just splashed a bit on my feet.
The door was still open, so when he was done, he ran inside.
I feel horrible. I honestly feel like I traumatized him.
Or maybe I made him really angry?
Do cats pee out of fear or anger? He is our first cat, so we are not super familiar with their temperament.
He was fine the rest of the day. As per usual, when we let our dog out, he was still curious. He continued to use his litter box like normal. Again, I feel so bad! I feel like I put him in an awful situation and he just didn’t know how to react.
Did I overwhelm him?
