Dog w/cancer and I have an afterdeath question

Original post: /r/relationship_advice/comments/e5kxdn/just_confirmed_that_my_5_yr_old_dog_has_cancer/

I intend to take my next dog on trips with me for work and whatnot just like I did with "Stinky" - he's a medium sized athletic dog at 40lbs. We've ran many many miles together.

I'm going to adopt another dog. But this one probably a bit older as I don't have the time to raise a puppy for the next 6 months. Of course I'm going to train it to all my liking but I just have time for potty/puppy training.

I'm wondering if I should get another of the same breed or get a bigger dog like a german shepherd, pointer, or doberman. Should I get the same breed I have - a great travel size dog, but will remind me of my sick doggo? Or go with something bigger which I originally thought "Stinky" was and might not remind me as much?

My other holdup on getting the same breed or similar size again is that I'd like one a bit more protective over family members... which is why GSD/doberman are other choices. Also I really like those breeds.

My current doggo is super super friendly to everyone which could be a reason why he was perfectly fine when our house got broken into and the dog was the only one home. Lol he probably got a belly rub from the burglar.

Thank you again. This would be a great question for r/askmen but I want female input as well since it might take into account things my male brain has not.
