Goldfish diet

I think this may be the right sub for my question!

Around a couple months ago I got four goldfish I keep in an adequately sized tank. They are still quite small, well under five centimeters.

I have been sticking to the food in the form of pellets the lady at the pet store recommended. These are very small and hard balls that get softer when they've been in water for quite some time and eventually seem to dissolve. My fish have been munching happily at these, so I guess it's the right food for them.

I searched around because I wanted to include some fresh food into their diets and maybe an occasional treat. Goldfish are omnivores and can apparently eat many different types of greens, fruits and small animals. I immediately ruled out the possibility of the live worms because I'm too squeamish for that, but I have "shaved" some of the top parts of a broccoli head and bought a box of the dried up shrimp that's usually sold to feed turtles.

I am under the impression they are not eating as much as they usually do, basically because I have them in my room at a close enough distance to be able to hear them noming the food at the surface.

Am I doing something wrong? Should I just stick to the store bought food only? Is the assumption that fresh food VS processed food would be as good for them as it is for humans wrong?

I wonder if the pieces are too big for them, maybe? I've sometimes seen one of them try to eat one of the pellets whole and immediately spit it out. But again, how would little fish in the wild be able to feed themselves if not by biting around food that's bigger than themselves?

Any idea is appreciated :)
