My family got a couple of rescue kittens from a friend about a month ago, and to help them settle and get used to the other pets of the house, they sleep together in our kitchen with food, water and kitty litter.
We have also had a kitchen conversion that was built in a new extension on our home so there is a lot of work being done at the moment.
I came home from work at midnight and opened our drawer to make some toast, and the smallest cat, Minnie bolted into the cupboard like she usually does, yet this time she slipped down a groove that extends to the piping that runs behind all the units.
I thought she would come out naturally if I left the door open for her, but upon further inspection the groove was oddly shaped, being kind of like a slanted, uneven drop I knew she could slide/drop-in but not get out. After trying to shake her biscuits to get her out nothing worked. I knew I would have to strong-arm her out as the kitchen couldn't just be disassembled to remove her (as much as I hoped). I rubbed my finger along the ridge of the gap so that she tried to swat me, and then pulled her out via her two front legs. She cried quite a bit and walked funny when she came out so I've taken her to the vet and they have said there is no significant damage and to just watch to see if it gets better.
Half relieved she didn't remain trapped and excrete behind the units, and half relieved shes safe and free.
