Sorry if this isnt the group for a post like this. I'm looking for anyone who may have heard of something like this. My kitten is dying and she has all the vets stumped..
Species: Cat Age: 4 months Breed: DLH Gender: F Not spayed Not vaccinated Dewormed Indoor only Medical history: This story starts one week ago.... Day 1, acting normally, threw up undigested food at the end of the day, acted normal after that. (Was eating whiskas dry food) Day 2, threw up again in the middle of the day... that night started acting lethargic. Day 3, very lathargic, low appetite, not drinking water. Took her to hermitage vet clinic in edmonton, temperature of 40.3, weighed in at 1.79, they ruled out leukemia and FELV and FIV. They gave her a anti nausea. Vet suggested a new food (purina essential care kitten formula wet food) that we started giving her immiately. Day 4, went in for follow up, she was not doing better, she hadnt thrown up again but she was sleeping ALL day and seemed very uncomfortable. She did gag once in a while, so they gave her an antibiotic injection that lasts 14 days in her system and ran blood tests. Day 5, went in for another follow up. Blood tests came back normal, Not doing better so they did an xray, saw nothing unusual. They gave her an anti-inflammatory injection. That night she seemed to feel alot better. Not completely but I'd say 50% ate a whole can of food, drank water, played a bit. Day 6, after learning that the anti-inflammatory may have helped they gave us 3 doses to give orally every 24 hours at home(7pm every night). That night, before we gave her her second dose of anti-inflammatory I noticed her breathing seemed odd. Almost as if she was flemmy or had to force air in and out, this was followed by intermittent fits of violent gagging and dry heaving. Day 7, still gagging and dry heaving (it sounds very very painful) she then threw up pure liquid along with a piece of a treat wrapper that was about finger nail sized. I hoped that was the cause of the problem, although it didnt show up on xray. But she was still heaving and gagging and is just as lethargic and not eating. The anti-inflammatory hasnt seemed to help since the first dose of it was given. She was also still breathing oddly. That night it slowly got a bit worse, so we took her to a different vet clinic, the doctor there took her temperature which was now 39.5, weighed her in at 1.70, told me he was 90% sure something was stuck in her throat and he recommended us to go to the animal hospital the next morning. DAY 8, TODAY, got to the Gaurdian animal hospital in edmonton at 8am, the did xrays again because when they listened to her breathing it sounded "pretty noisy in there" and they were worried about pneumonia. Xrays came back... no signs of pneumonia, and no signs of a foreign body lodged anywhere... they told me that even if the foreign body didnt show up there would still be signs that something was there so they were pretty confident that her throat was clear of blockage. They then compared her new xrays to the ones taken days ago and noticed that her airway was considerably narrower, so much so that they were very very concerned. Through the day Mavis was getting worse and the doctors noticed. Ithen waited for a long time while the vet consulted her colleagues. She came back to me and said "It is very uncommon that we have a case where a surgeon, an internal meds doctor, and myself dont know what's going on." She gave me a few options... sedated oral exam, but she said she wouldnt be able to see very far down. Endoscopy which she was not confident my kitten would survive and recover from either of these tests. She also brought up a barium swallow test but her and her colleagues agreed it was too dangers at this time being that she could aspirate the barium liquid and get it in her lungs if she threw it up which apparently is not good. Finally we all decided the best course of action is to have her stay the night at the hospital... discontinue the anti-inflammatory she was being given and start her on a steroid injection, and a stronger antibiotic. The vet said that if this is an allergic reaction or any type of inflammation the steroid will help. We left the hospital without our kitten at 4:30. We got a call at 7 saying she was not doing well, still gagging and gasping, but also developed some neurological symptoms such as falling over. They feel that's attributed to lack of oxygen and lack of sleep (she hasent slept in 48 hours because she has to stay sitting of standing with her neck stretched out or she cant breathe at all)... today we also noticed a white little lump on her bottom lip. No idea if it is related to anything going on. She has also not eaten or drank anything today. She breathes with her mouth open and its gaspy. She gags about every 3 minutes. Poops have been normal this whole time.
