Hey there Reddit,
Unfortunately my pet cat Takkun passed away recently, due to an unknown disease that took over his entire body. Takkun and his brother Jiji were rescue cats (feral to begin with), and they've never been separated.
They became quite independent during the 3.5 years we had them both, but they would still sleep next to each other almost every night and would regularly clean one another. Since taking Takkun to the 24 hr vets and then him passing, Jiji usually wakes me up around 1am/4am wailing loudly for some attention. Usually, in the past Takkun would leave my bed to join him.
Last night I gave him some attention at around 1am and then due to further crying, I slept next to him in the living room and he was more peaceful around then. Jiji hasn't really shown any signs of depression as far as I'm aware, because this behaviour is only really happening at night. He's still playful during the day and is seeking the same amount of attention.
Of course, I don't want to turn this into a pattern where I or my partner wake up at night to sleep next to him. We love him to bits and want the best for him, but it may turn into a reoccurring problem that will also affect our mental health, as we're struggling with the loss of his brother rather badly.
If anybody has any tips on how to help my cat, that would be great. We've since provided some new toys, given extra treats and loving attention but this may turn into a big problem for us. Thanks.
