Possible alternatives to fencing in a yard.

Hey all. So, my entire life I've had tiny dogs - our biggest is a beagle mix we've got at the moment. I've loved every one we've had and I love the one we have right now, but I've always wanted a big dog. Something smart, that I could train, and something that could be a buddy for our beagle.

Picking the breed isn't a problem - I know what would be best considering the area in which we live and the seasons and temperatures we typically deal with - but the problem is our house. The breeds I've looking at, specifically a German Shepherd or a Golden Retriever, are just too big for us. We're a two story house, main floor is the second one, and while not tiny, it's just not big enough for a dog of that size. Our beagle is pushing it enough.

My folks are completely supportive of me getting an animal, but their caveat, understandably so, is a big dog needs to have some sort of easy access to the backyard so it isn't cooped up inside 24/7.

For the longest time, we've only really seen one possible solution to that - fencing in our yard. But for various reasons, that just isn't gonna happen, and while we considered an electric fence, we rules that one out too as, with our luck, the pup would either take it as a challenge and try to outsmart it, and either succeed, or get hurt in the process. We also ruled out anchoring it to trees because - well, we don't have any that'd serve our purposes, so I've pretty much resigned myself to not getting a dog until I move out in a few years.

But just yesterday it was brought to my attention that alternative answers exist that I didn't know about or just didn't consider - among them being buying a stake and a tie-out and anchoring it in the backyard.

That got the gears spinning, and I thought, as I do my own research, I'd come here (hopefully I'm at the right place) and get some more alternative ideas to fencing in the backyard, maybe some advice and stories from folks in similar situations.

So does anyone have any advice? Any ideas? My personal best case scenario would be some kind of system (for lack of a better term) where I could lay down and link a bunch of stakes together and then hook the tie-out onto that, to give the prospective pup as much room as possible, but I'm willing to hear anything. I've already seen stakes and tie outs that would keep a 100+ lb dog down and give it plenty of running room.

Thanks for the time, and if this is the wrong subreddit I'm perfectly fine moving it somewhere else.
