Can someone please explain the concept of pets to me? I live in a place where seemingly everyone has or wants one, and although I've been looking everywhere for answers, I still just don't get the point in having a pet.
Like, every time I go to a friend's place and they have a dog (or really any other pet) they always scare the life out of me with their 'harmless' and 'playful' barks and I always have to be told that "they're more scared of me than I am of them". I always really doubt that and I always act different when I know a pet's in the same place. This somewhat offends all pet owners I've ever come across as if it's mandatory for everyone to like pets.
The same goes for when their pets inevitably pass away. I'm always told that pets are like family for their owners, but that just doesn't seem logical enough for me to buy/understand. Like, it gets to the point where they'd be more sad losing a pet than losing a sibling or parent. I'm always the one coming across as weird for not feeling sorry for the loss, but to me they were just animals and I always think that if a person knows the average life span of a pet just is shorter than a human's that they just brought it upon themselves for adopting the pet in the first place.
But I feel like I'm the only one out there who's just stupid enough to not get the point. I don't care if I'm being downvoted for coming across as a heartless monster with no emotions or if this isn't in line with what should be discussed in this Subreddit, but after unsuccessfully looking all over the internet could someone PLEASE just explain me: What's the point in having pets?
