I have an 18 year old staffordshire terrier. He is an absolute sweetheart and is probably the most loving dog I've ever met. He is abnormally attached to me and shuts down when I'm not around. I'm in a bind cause I don't know what to do. His health is ok, he still walks, trots, hops, hears and sees. Every time he comes in he hops through the entire house and then trots, it is absolutely wonderful to watch. His medical conditions, he has arthritis in the back hips and can walk with a limp at times, he has prostate cancer, and the doctor believes he has canine cognitive disorder because, and only has been doing this since he got put on antibiotics, he stares at open doorways suspiciously for prolonged periods of time, barks randomly and paces for about 45 minutes regularly.
I'll try keeping the problem from here short. I graduated my masters and accepted a job offer. I did not see it fair to let him live out his life barely having someone around so my parents opted to take him. First time he had a bout of diarrhea in the house my dad demanded he be put down. I move Friday and start my new job Monday, I've been debating retrieving my dog since he is my dog. I've had him for 18 years but I also fear that with his needs he may be too much for me and be extremely lonely when I'm gone during the day. When he is left alone, he will pee and poop in the house. The other option is to put him to sleep.
I feel like he has a lot of love still, he seems happy 80 percent of the time and even when he has problems, I know he's still in there when I talk to him. What options would be available to keep him company during the day if I were to take him?
I want him to be happy and feel safe as he passes, at the same time I'm unable to be there for him outside a few hours a day to ensure he's not lonely.
