What does it mean to "love" a pet?

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about what it truly means to love a pet, whether it be a dog, cat, bird, etc. Its too easy for anyone to say, " I love my dog," but by observing some questionable actions by the owners, it makes me wonder what that emotion really is that they call "love."

Here is an example:

I did some quick research on the dog food someone buys for their dog. He mixes kibble with canned dog food so we'll start with the canned food first.

The canned dog food he buys is rated below average at 2.5 stars on dogfoodadvisor. I tell him that it is basically garbage, but he continues to buy this cheap dog food from the local liquor store.

Today I look up the reviews on the kibble that he is mixing with the other dog food. This one was even worse than the previous one that was rated at 2.5 stars. This kibble was rated at 1 star on dogfoodadvisor!

He basically feeds his dog the cheapest, crappiest food knowing how bad it is. He puts no effort in keeping his dog healthy, mentally and physically. He just cuddles it and gives it smooches as he tells it how much he loves her in baby talk. Is this really love? I refuse to believe he truly loves his dog.

I just want to understand what emotion this. Can you truly love a pet while knowingly neglecting its health? I refuse to believe that. Sorry for the bad grammar.

TL;DR - I want to know if someone can truly "love" their pet while knowingly feeding it the crappiest of food and neglecting its overall health.
