Advice for giving pills to a cat without food

Our cat has gastritis and we've been given some omeprazole for him. Normally if he has meds, we crush and mix them into food and he'll eat them happily.

Apparently we need to give him the omeprazole an hour before food however. Any advice on this? We were thinking of hiding it in a really small bit of food or a pill pocket, but not sure if that will cause problems for the meds. I'm doubtful he'd eat the pills at all without though!
