My partner and I have recently introduced a new cat into our apartment after the loss of one of the other cats. Lyra, 3 year old calico, is gentle and shy with both humans and other cats, but demanded so much attention after the loss that we started to get worried. So we got another cat, who we were assured was good with other cats, but then I wouldn't be here, would I?
Roxie, 2 year old tortie, is much more aggressive than we were expecting. We did the whole introduction process, and thought it was going smoothly. They were approaching the door between them, showing good curiosity and being content when we switched their rooms, etc.
For the first day they tolerated each other, but then on the second day, something scared them. They were in the middle of taking careful sniffs at each other when something fell, and the loud sound sent them both running - they ran into each other. They swatted and hissed and growled, and that was that. After that they wanted nothing to do with each other.
Roxie has gotten very territorial, and freely wanders the house while Lyra hides in my room and is too scared to leave. Roxie will make occasional trips to my room just to stare at Lyra and sometimes chase her under the bed, and then mark vertical surfaces by rubbing on them, before leaving.
Lyra is still eating, drinking, and relieving herself, but all those things can't be too close to the door or she'll just stop using it. I tried briefly to move the litter box closer to the door in an attempt to encourage her (I know, bad idea), but then she just urinated on the bed until I moved it back.
There have been a few times we got Lyra out, but Roxie plays the staring game again, and sometimes rushes up to Lyra to swat at her and chase her back into my room. Neither cat likes treats or wet food, and currently we don't exactly have the money or ability to just buy a bunch of different treats and wet food for them to try and then not eat.
They are both such sweet cats, and we already love Roxie so much so there is no way we're taking her back.
Is this just a matter of playing the waiting game? It's been nearly a month and I'm so anxious. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
