Cat going stir crazy. Need advice.

My cat (let's call him "Jay") has been with us for years. And years ago, he stopped using his litter box and almost exclusively spent time outside. But recently, there's been a few stray cats around, and we have some coming and going from under our house. Jay has gotten into some fights, to a point where he doesn't want to go outside anymore. He'll walk up to the door, and hiss. Trying to put him out will cause him to immediately turn around and scratch at the door for up to several hours until you let him in. And this is a huge problem, because most of his entertainment came from being outside.

Now he's cooped up in here with us, and he's going crazy. He's constantly running around and rubbing on things, chewing on boxes, chewing on cords, knocking stuff over, and CONSTANTLY asking for attention. At first it was cute, but now it's irritating all of us. It's to the point where he won't leave anybody alone until he's asleep.

There's 4 holes that these strays climb in and out of, and we don't have the resources nor the patience to capture them or plug up the holes. And even if we did, we wouldn't know where to start. What should I do?
