Hi guys! I hope you are doing well. I have some questions with regards to a pair of kittens which i intend to adopt at the age of 8 weeks. This gives me roughly 6 weeks to prepare.
After a very difficult and year long persuasion, I have been given permission to adopt a cat given they will remain outside the house. This is non-negotiable. My concern, however, was that since cats lead rather brutish lives outdoors, i was naturally worried about their safety. This led me to compromise that I can build an enclosure in my backyard behind my room (i would be able to walk into said enclosure directly through sliding door windows). While the backyard is 50 feet by 20, i only intend to keep the encosure to about length of 15 by 5 because it would canibablize to much of the backyard otherwise. I initially wanted to catproof my backyard but this is impossible due to way its built.
Details of enclosure
The design i have in mind is similar to this but a bit smaller (less wide). https://youtu.be/_tbNowSmXiU I believe this sort of enclosure will allow the cats to have enough mental stimulation along with other stuff in the backyard like birds etc. I also intend to let the cats run around backyard supervised for about an hour a day (with a harness on).
Now my questions is if the cats are to live exclusively in that enclosure (two cats) is that space to small? My personal inclination is that it would be small, but from what I understand a cat needs minimum space of 18 square feet, and what i am offering is close 75 square feet between two cats and it would be about 10 feet high, with plenty of jumping spots and a cat tree type tower.
With regards to socialization I intend to spend around an hour of active time with them daily and my family members may chip in an hour or so during the day so they will have attention. Also I can constantly see them if i am sitting in my room through the window and walk to them if they need any attention.
So again i ask, is the space too small if they lived in the enclosure? Thanks!
