So this is kind of a unique scenario as far as I know, but a few months ago my roommates and I found a cat hanging around outside our house, and she looked an awful lot like my cat that i currently keep inside my home. I started feeding her because she would come stand at our door, day and night, waiting for us to open the door to go in or out. A while passes and we find out she is pregnant. Unsure of what to do we scheme on how to best take care of the situation. We all work weird hours (food service) and we could never come up with a good plan to have her taken to the vet and assessed there. Then covid happens. Fast forward a few weeks into social distancing and we notice the cat is a LOT thinner, but she is obviously not showing us the kittens out in the open. We accept that she will show them to us eventually, and we weren’t going to rush anything to go and seek them out. The next day we hear what sounds like meowing coming from our backyard. Turns out Armstrong (the outside cat) has had her litter of 3 in between our fence and our neighbors fence. We see that they look extremely dirty, but upon further examination they were nestled into a fire ant hill and COVERED in ants. We took them inside to essentially try to save them and now we’re unsure of what to do next. We don’t want to give them back to the momma because we know that it’s not safe for them in their old spot and she will not come inside to our house or garage to see them without just trying to steal them out of their bed one by one. I guess my main question is, if anyone has any more experience with this kind of thing than 3 college guys, I would really appreciate the advice. I’m kind of freaking out over this situation because of the quarantine and lack of resources etc.
TL;DR: My outside cat had kittens in a nest of fire ants, and now that we’ve cleaned them off and gotten them warm, we don’t know what to do to make sure they have the best chance of survival
