So these two weirdos are my cats. The black and white one in the background is my female cat named Laverne and the black cat in the foreground is Laverne's brother, Squiggy. They're three years old and my boyfriend and I have had them since they were roughly six to eight weeks old. Both cats were spayed and neutered when they were kittens. Within the past few months, we've had an issue with Squiggy peeing on our furniture. It started when we had friends over on New Year's Eve. He got mad because people were over, so he peed on the couches. I took him to the vet and they suggested I get some fancy plug-in contraption so that the smell from the plug-in will calm him down, but I didn't get it because it was expensive. However, I did get a second litter box and unscented litter. We had it under our desk by the stairs for about a month and then, we moved it to the office by the treadmill.
For a while, things were going well. I forgot to mention that the laundry room is on the other side of the office and my boyfriend installed a cat door and a homemade tunnel so the cats can go from the office to the laundry room and vice versa. Anyways, both cats were happy using the litter box in the office, but after a while, litter was getting all over the floor, so we moved the litter box to the laundry room and opened the treadmill. This made Squiggy mad, so he retaliated by pooping on the treadmill. Some time later, he was peeing on all the couches and the lazy boy in the living room as well as the two couches in our bedroom. Today, I got him in trouble because he peed really badly on our lazy boy and then, he watched me while he peed on one of the couches in the living room while I was in the middle of a video conference.
My question is what can I do to make him stop? I've used cleaners and special vacuum cleaners on the furniture. My boyfriend and I were talking about it a few minutes ago and he suggested getting Listerine and putting that on the furniture because apparently, cats don't like the smell of that. Usually, he is a good cat and tends to slink around the house and hide, especially when there's people over. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
