I had these flat, decorative glass pieces on the top of my bookshelf. I have two kittens, around 10 months old, that go up on the bookshelf to watch me eat at my table or just because they feel like it. The bookshelf is short, around 3 feet tall. They knocke the glass pieces over sometimes when they jump off, but my floor is carpeted so they never broke.
Last night they knocked one off and it fell behind the bookshelf in a way that I would have to move the shelf to get to it. It was late at night, and I decided to deal with it later. When I looked behind the shelf, it didn't look broken, so I thought it was fine. They knocked another one over again today and I decided to grab the other and saw that it had shattered.
I found all the large pieces and they fit together, but a small part about the size of my fingernail had shattered into little pieces. I vacuumed up everything I could see, and put a t-shirt over the area where it fell in case there were any small bits left in the carpet.
I'm worried because right before I found it, they were going behind the bookshelf. They usually don't, but tonight I guess they were curious or they wanted to play with the glass. When I saw that it had totally shattered (I thought it had just broke it half at first) I locked them in their carriers while I cleaned it all up.
Once I got it cleaned up, I checked their paws and mouths and I didn't see any cuts or blood. The shattered tiny pieces where kind of right against the wall rather than spread out, so maybe they didn't mess with them, but I'm still worried they may have eaten some.
What should I look out for? I assume a vet couldn't see one or two tiny pieces of glass and I really can't afford to have them both x-rayed since I'm not working right now. If they did swallow a tiny piece, is it likely that it would really hurt them or would they most likely pass it?
