Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I live in a one-bedroom apartment that's roughly 750 sq. feet. We adopted our sweet cat, Sophie, in July of 2019, and she's about to turn a year old in a few weeks. We've been talking about getting a new kitten to keep Sophie company when we're not home. We figured since we're going to be home for a while, right now would be the perfect time to adopt so we can spend as much time with both of them as we can.
Well... today we picked up Kona! He's 8 weeks old, super quiet, but super energetic! We brought him home and Sophie was NOT happy. We initially kept him in his carrier, and allowed Sophie to sniff him. However, after the first sniff, she was already hissing. Prior to Kona, Sophie has really only been in contact with two animals- one cat and one dog, separate occasions. Each time ended in Sophie hissing, and essentially starring at them for the remainder of the visit.
Throughout the day, we separated Sophie and Kona in two separate rooms. Considering we live in a one bedroom, it's a little difficult to separate them. Currently, I'm in our bedroom with Kona while my boyfriend is in the living room with Sophie. We want each of them to be in the company of one of us, especially Sophie, as we don't want her to get jealous or sad because of Kona. Each time we try to have them interact, Sophie hisses, growls, and attempts to hit Kona. She even has stare offs with him in the distance, and I swear she does something with her eyes I've never seen her do before we got him lol. Overall, it's not going too well.
Kona's fine overall, and doesn't seem fazed by her. He just walks away, but she is getting VERY territorial. Tonight, we're having my boyfriend sleep in the living room with Sophie while I sleep in the bedroom with Kona to ease the tension. I'm just worried... how long will it take for Sophie to adjust to Kona? Are there any tips for a resident cat to get along with a kitten, especially in a small space (one bedroom apartment)? We got Kona so Sophie had a friend to play with once things get back to normal, and my boyfriend and I return to work and school in-person. We want them to become best friends... but this first day is STRESSFUL! Even making me sad that my boyfriend and I can't be in the same room together because of the two, lol.
Any tips are appreciated!!!!!
