My girlfriend and I recently discovered that we believe that her cat, Riley, has some sort of tapeworm infection. Through my basic research I learned that tapeworm proglottids in and around the anus of a cat, or in the cat's feces, are a good indicator of a tapeworm infection. She found several of these proglottids, which she described as small, clearish-brown grains of rice, on her bed, and upon further inspection, in the fur around her cat's anus.
I'm wondering what actions should be taken in terms of both the cat, and the humans in the household/household itself: should the cat remain outside until she can be treated? Is diagnosis by a professional veterinarian necessary for their family to purchase a deworming medication (like praziquantel) and give it to the cat? Should the people in their house immediately do anything to eradicate intermediate hosts of the parasite like fleas? Is the concern of transmission of the tapeworms to humans something that is a legitimate concern worth expending effort to prevent?
Thank you very much, I hope that these questions can be answered!
