(Sorry for grammar and stuff. Trying to write this out on a phone with a broken screen) I have a pure white fluffy cat. He is 5 years old and I had him fixed, as soon as it was possible to get him fixed, since I had also brought home his all black short hair sister . A little background. When we got them they were very very sick. Upper respiratory infections that almost took their eyes. I rescued them from a friend who was trying to re home them, but couldn't find a home for them because they were a little bit older than the normal age you re home kittens and they looked really bad. She also told me that while the momma cat was pregnant, they would get her high with weed, and after the babies were born they would get them high as well every day. Even the day I went to pick them up, they had smoked and got them high so they would be calm through the 8 hour trip I was taking them home. I did not ask them to do that. My husband actually thought I had brought home dead cats because he met us halfway and they were limp in his arms. They are strictly inside cats and always have been.
On to the issue at hand. Data , the white cat, goes absolutely crazy when he sees another cat outside the house. He will violently attack ANYTHING that moves near him. The first instance this ever happened, was about a year after we had him. He saw a cat outside and got himself stuck between a screene door and a glass sliding door. I waited until the other cat ran off and went to get him un stuck. He just completely attacked me and bit clear through my thumb.
Second time, we had just gotten a new puppy. Tiny little shih tzu poodle mix. A broom dropped in the kitchen and made a loud bang and he decided to just go crazy and attack the puppy. He was basically attached to her and she was pretty cut up. I grabbed her out of his claws and then he kept going after me and trying to climb me to get to her. I was injured pretty badly. Had to lock my self and the puppy in the room with my daughter who was about 5 at the time because he kept trying to come after me and the puppy. My husband had to come home and when he came in the cat had calmed down and acted like nothing had even happened.
Since that time he has grown pretty fond of the puppy and she is now a little bit bigger than him. They will play and sometimes nap in the same general area. Both cats never sleep with the dog. Just near her sometimes.
Data will also randomly just attack his sister and they will have really loud fights and injure eachother. The carpet is covered in their hair afterwards.
We have a new addition in the family. Our son who is currently 6 months old. When he was a month old I had him on the floor doing tummy time. Data saw a cat outside and turned around and acted like he was going to go after my son. I put my self in his path and he just walked away with his tail wagging. Since then he really doesn't even pay any attention to the baby. And other friends have brought kids of all ages over and he never has any issues with them and is actually really curious when it comes to other kids, but i always try to catch him and lock him in a room just in case when we have company over.
Data and my daughter are really close (she is 9 now) . He waits for her to wake up in the morning. And he instantly starts purring as soon as she says his name. He melts into her arms whenever she picks him up. I yelled at her about something once and she started crying. He attacked me and defended her. I had to lock my self In a room again until he calmed down.
Now for the issue I am currently having. There are a TON of stray cats in our neighborhood. Literally 5 different ones. Tonight one was at the front door when I went out. Data saw that cat and jumped up on the screen to hiss at him. Our dog decided to walk behind Data and had no idea he was even mad, so he turned around and attacked her. I had to basically pull them apart and my daughter came over worried about the dog. The cat then started to go after my daughter and I had to put my self between them. He attacked me. I had to beat him off with the lid of a storage container. The dog has deep puncture wounds in her neck and I have treated them. She is limping a little from puncture wounds on her upper leg. My leg hurts and my daughter is basically traumatized and upset because she is mad at the cat but also loves him. Minutes after the attack, the cat and dog are FINE and hanging out together like nothing even happened.
My daughter and dog usually know how to stay away from the cat when he gets in his "moods". But this one came on so fast. Literally nothing will distract this cat from attacking. I have tried pouring water on him. Squirting him with water. Distracting him with foods like tuna and cat treats. When he is in those mood it is like he is a different cat.
I am SO scared because my son is just starting to crawl. He is way to young to understand not to get close to the cat when he sees another cat outside. I don't know what I would do if he ever got attacked by Data.
What can I do??? If i take the cat to the pound, I know they will most likely put him to sleep because he attacks people when he is triggered. I don't want that. I won't be able to re home him because I'll have to tell them he isn't good with other animals and will attack you if you get near him when he even sees other animals. I also don't want to risk not telling someone about his issues and then having him attack them.
On top of that, my daughter absolutely loves him. She says he is her familiar and he sleeps with her every night (another note: she is actually allergic to him. If she rubs her face in his fur it swells up and she gets watery eyes, a runny nose, and needs benadryl. But as long as she doesn't do that she is fine. )
So far I have thought about getting stuff to cover the windows at his eye level so he can't see out of them. And calling our housing office to see if they can come remove all the stray cats on our loop.
Is there any way to help keep the stray cats out of our yards? Or any advice on how to help curb this behavior? I DO NOT believe in de clawing cats, but at this point it seems his claws are the main issue, as they do the most damage. Honestly I could never do that to him. I could never re home him. I could never let him be put to sleep. I still love him and he is a good cat 90% of the time. As long as no one goes near him when he sees a cat outside, he will calm down after the cat leaves his field of vision.
What do I do?? Please and thank you for any advice. Sorry it is so long .
Tl:dr. Cat violently attacks anything that moves in the house when it sees a stray cat outside. Son is starting to crawl soon and I am afraid of him getting hurt. Need advice.
