Hi guys, first post on reddit and I'm on mobile so sorry if I mess anything up. For both our dog and our cat they are the first pets we have owned. Neither of us grew up with animals so we've just tried to learn from online, training classes and our friends. I've got two pets that I love of course. A cat (8months) that we rescued from the shelter last November and a collie lab mix (1 1/2 years). They both drive me insane!!! I work from home for the most part before all the craziness happened. At most I was gone from the house for a few afternoons a week. We live out in the country on five acres, so sometimes I would bring my dog in with me to go to the dog park or for walks in town to socialize and smell new things or whatever. Being the breed he is he is very smart and does not have a lot of behaviour issues (chewing, barking ect.) since I'm home to train him to keep out of stuff. But he never. Stops. Watching me. He follows me from room to room, watching my every move all day. If I go near a door he bolts to his feet. If I go near an outside door he whines and gets excited. Even if he's eating and I go to leave the room he sprints from his food to follow me. If I'm sitting down he sits on my feet if possible or as close as he can. That and alternating between resting his head on my legs or just staring at me for 30 plus minutes from across the room when I tell him to go away. If I tell him to go upstairs he goes but sits at the top of the stairs and as soon as I say he can come down he bolts down and comes straight to me. I'm so tired of this! He will literally do nothing on his own. As for him being bored as the problem, we have five acres and a run set up for him that is 70 meters long with trees and bushes and grass to run around in. He spends time out there especially if I'm trying to get anything done because he gets in the way so much. I do a minimum 45 minute walk with him every day. On the days I cant I play fetch with him for a least twenty minutes and usually do that every day anyways. I love to be outside so he gets lots of time off his run to run around our full five acre property. I haven't been in town much lately but he used to come now and then with me as I said before.. Now for the cat... she never shuts up. We introduced her to the house slowly by a few rooms at a time when we first brought her to the house, her main safe spot being the main floor bathroom. She is an indoor cat. We play with her, I put her out on the aforementioned dog run, she entertains herself with plastic shreds and boxes. And she never shuts up. We put her in the bathroom at night because she will not stay off the kitchen counter and gobbles everything she possibly can. Last time we left her out she scratched open some butter and had eaten half a cup by the morning. Shes a small cat and the vet told us she was overweight (our first cat so we just went off the recommended feeding guide, but since she is small it was apparently too much.) so I dont want her to get fatter. We keep it as clean as possible but sometimes we just dont wash every dish and wipe the counters perfectly clean before bed so we dont leave her out. My husband leaves for work early so he feeds her in the morning and as soon as she hears a peep of him getting up she starts yowling from the bathroom. I keep earplugs next to my bed that I wear every morning when he gets up at 6am. When I get up later I let her out and feed her again. I try to wait a little while so she doesn't just get food right away and I try to not give it to her unless shes quiet but she has not learned to shut up with me doing that twice a day for five months. She meows after shes been fed. She meows if you go near her. She meows if you move in her general vicinity. So between a dog that is on my heels with every breath and a cat that meows 24/7 I can never freaking relax if they are both around. Sometimes I put him out on the line and her in the bathroom just to have a moment to myself during the day. But then if course if I move she meows nonstop from the bathroom. Help! I've been trying to tell myself that having pets is a lot of work and this is normal but I'm also being driven slowly insane by these two sacks of fur!
