Picking at catès crusty eye boogers - Is it akin to picking at a scab?

Hi all,

My cat regularly gets crusty eye boogers (very small, nothing excessive so no cause for concern there), and I typically clean his eyes of them. Part of it is because I feel like it might annoy him, but also part of it is because, I have to admit it, he obviously looks better without them.

This morning it just hit me. Is picking at the crusty eye boogers the equivalent of us picking at our scabs? Sometimes it looks like the skin underneath is ever so slightly raw. Might just be my imagination...
