Question on methimazole for cats.

Cat may or may not have hyperthyroidism. Doc took samples needed and said it will be 2 weeks before they get results back due to workforce reductions recently. She said to give her 5mg methimazole everyday to be on the safe side and that if she doesn't have it there shouldn't be and long lasting negative side effects. I didn't think to ask at the time, but if my cat has completely different underlying problem could this medicine have nasty side effects in this case?

What are your opinion about the assessment? Still going to ask the vet just thought if see is anyone else has experience with this situation.
