I've always used hissing as a negative action (from the reading I did when I first thought about getting a cat), and having been a dog owner previously, I just pat him and say good boy in a 'happy' voice if that makes sense, for the positive action.
But what are the actually "correct," actions? I think I've raised my cat pretty well. We get along, he's cuddly with me in an exclusive way. He looks to me for attention and play, and has never bit me or scratched me (on purpose).
