Exhausted by cat introduction and need advice

Hi,

I got a new cat (male, 8 months) about 2 months ago. I set up the separate room and followed all the advice about slow introductions. The only problem was that in the first couple of weeks the new cat escaped a few times while I was trying to come into his room and my old cat (female, 1.5 years) attacked him.

It's been a couple of months now, and I'm only at a point where she takes a few minutes to attack him rather than immediately. I keep moving back a stage when this happens, and try to only have them in contact in positive circumstances (meal/treat time).

It just seems like she's never going to accept him, and I feel terrible keeping him in his room most of the time. I spend lots of time with them both (cuddles and playing), but even getting into his room without him escaping/her entering is a challenge.

I feel really defeated and exhausted, and don't think this will be sustainable once my country/state is out of lockdown and I'm back at work.

I guess I just want to know - is it worth continuing? Should I just let him out and see what happens? Or should I be looking into re-homing him? Does anyone have similar a story?

Any responses would be really appreciated.
