My 4 yr old indoor cat wants to go outside SO badly, I’m too scared to let her and I feel guilty.

I have a 4 yr old female cat who has been extremely interested in the outdoors lately. We also had a 14 yr old female who passed away a few months ago, and the 4 yr old seems lonely. Ever since the other cat passed she’s been much more interested in the strays in our neighborhood too. I’ve caught her halfway out the window (she pushed the screen open herself!) and sneaking around in the garage looking for a way out twice already. When the windows are open and any of us are outside she sits at the screen and meows like crazy. She’s also extremely jealous of our dog who spends most of the day on the porch, right outside the cats favorite window.

I’d love to try a harness on her, but the problem is she won’t let ANYONE hold her. Even if I could hold her to get the harness on, if she got out of it there is absolutely NO way I could get her back. I’ve looked into catios or tents, but my fear is that if she gets loose there’s no way we could grab her and get her back in.

I would love to let her outside and I feel so bad having to tell her no. But I also don’t want to risk her getting away. We live near two major roadways and I can’t run the risk of her getting hurt.

Anyone have any other suggestions on other things that might work?
