Older cat is 1 year, younger cat is 4 months. I got younger cat two weeks ago, and after a week of separation, they were introduced and seemed interested in playing, all seemed to be going well. But I noticed that older keeps playing too rough with younger, keeps pinning him down and younger cat keeps growling and crying, it sounds like they are fighting! Usually before I can get to them to break it up, it stops.
A family member who has had many cats throughout her life told me to not separate them at night so that’s what I’ve been doing, she said they will figure it out, that younger cat is just trying to set boundaries with older cat. But they haven’t and I’m wondering if I have been given wrong advice.
Older cat doesn’t make any fighting sounds, and he just looks like he’s playing. But younger cat is clearly very threatened and scared when this happens, it’s getting to a point where I am worried they will hurt each other.
When they aren’t fighting, they sleep next to each other, I notice they lick each other, and often they instigate play with each other, chase each other around the house and bat each other gently with their paws. Claws aren’t out when they are playing except for when older cat has pinned younger cat down or cornered him.
I don’t know what to do, will they grow out of this? It seems like they are getting along 90% of the time, but this 10% is really starting to concern me.
