Short term pet ideas?

I've been craving the companionship of a little buddy for a while, but I've been put off due to the fact that my life is quite unpredictable right now.

For the next 2 years, I'll be living at home while going to university. But I'll also be going abroad 2 or 3 times a year (for 1-3 weeks each time) to visit family. Then in about 2 years' time, once I graduate, I'll hopefully be moving out to do some long term travelling. (10-12 months)

So if I were to get a pet, it would ideally be one which:

- Will die within 2 years (as sad as that is..)

- Won't get too stressed about me leaving a few times a year (I have family who can feed it, but they probably won't give it the same levels of attention)

- Is relatively easy to care for (similar to the above, I don't expect my family to be able to care very well for a pet with special needs while I'm away)

And as for personal preferences, I would like something which I can interact with and play with. Ideally, something which wouldn't be dangerous or.. bitey. Oh, and it should fit in a cage of some sort, so no Cats/Dogs.

Does anyone have any suggestions? There's no shelter near me, so fostering isn't really an option.

Right now I'm thinking the best option would be adopting a couple of adult Rats, but I worry about how they would settle into a new home and if they would be trusting/playful with me like they would if I were to raise them from babies. I also worry about how they will cope with me being gone for 2-3 weeks. I know the rest of my household will feed them and clean their cage, but I don't think they'll want to play with them or look after them free-roaming.

There's a couple of pet sitting type places nearby who could look after them, and I presume they would make time to play with them. Has anyone done something like that before with a pet rodent?

Hamsters are another idea as they seem to live shorter lives, but apparently they're a bit less friendly..

I'm also open to fish/insect type animals, but there's not really the interactivity there.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Or should I start looking for pet plants..
