Trying to domesticate feral cat? Is it possible?

My friend has been taking care of a litter of kittens that were born under her workplace for the past year. About a month ago she decided she wanted to bring one of them home with her, so she trapped the friendliest one and brought it home. She has five other adult cats. The cat she brought home is about a year old and friendly but extremely skittish. She hisses at the other cats and spends 90% of the time hiding under a bed. She also acts as if she doesn’t recognize you whenever you enter the room and you have to call her in order for her to come out from under the bed. She has no interest in exploring any other part of the house and she absolutely does not let you pick her up, she’s been here for a little over a month. I don’t know where we should go from here, it seems like she’s made very little progress in becoming a house cat. I’ve been trying to help my friend get her used the other parts of the house but so far it’s been going kinda bad. Did my friend make a mistake? Should we put her back under her workplace? Does she just need more time? Also plz no rude comments, I personally wouldn’t of taken the cat in but my friend just has a soft spot for animals and figured she was doing something good for the cat.
