HELP: Anxious Dog and New Kitten

I’m sure this gets posted a lot, but I have new kitten and my pup...isn’t taking the new addition well. I’m hoping for some tips.

The dog in question, Layla, is a 5 y/o mini Australian Shepard who is pretty anxious but not aggressive. She HATES delivery people, mailmen, and squirrels, but as soon as anyone comes in our home she stops barking and begs to be loved. She’s never bitten anyone or been aggressive in that way, but I have seen her growl at the mail man.

Because she’s lovable, albeit hyper, my family didn’t think it would be a problem getting a kitten. We adopted 3 month old Sadie 3 weeks ago. She’s great and very playful. But Layla is not taking to her well. At first she barked at the sight of her and gets herself in a tizzy when my family plays with Sadie, barking, shaking, and panting. It’s sad to watch because I can tell my dog is super uncomfortable even if the cat seems unphased by most of it

Sadie is still mostly confined to one room of the house for most of the day, but we’re trying to get her and Layla accustom to each other. We hold Sadie and let Layla come up to her and sniff at her. And the. We hold Layla and let Sadie wander around. Layla has been doing much better in the past week. She doesn’t bark on sight and is relatively calm when I am holding the kitten, but as soon as Sadie goes to move around, Layla gets anxious and shaky and tries to break away and sometimes chases after her. I’m not sure if she’s just curious or out for blood. But the kitten hisses at her when she gets too close and Layla growls back.

I’m worried it won’t ever get better and, now that we love our little kitten, we’ll have to make a tough decision. Please tell me there is hope here! Any advice is helpful!

Tl;dr my dog is anxious and a aggressive around my new kitten and I don’t know if it will get better.
