Are flea collars safe?

So, I have a dog. I love my dog very much.

Anyway, my dog gets sort of "dogsat" at my parents' house while I'm at work. My parents have a dog of their own.

My dog gets really bad anxiety when he's in the Josie alone, so I take him to my parents house when I'm not home because he feels better and he also has a giant yard to play in there.

So I didn't give my dog his nexgard on time unfortunately. I haven't seen him scratching or anything so I didn't realize I forgot to give it to him.

My step mom noticed that he had some fleas, and so did her dog. They don't give her nexgard or anything apparently.

So my step mom took it upon herself to go buy her dog and my dog each a flea collar.

I was immediately alarmed by this because I've read online that they basically slowly poison your dog. They radiate toxic chemicals around their head and will eventually make them sick. I understand that if they by chance get the collar in their mouth, they will get toxicity and die. Also read that they get chemicals all over your house which are dangerous to you and your kids.

I really don't want any of these things to happen.

I think my step mom would be really offended if I just wasted the flea collar she paid for. So I'm trying to figure out if these things I've read are actually true.

So, what is your opinion on flea collars? Are they dangerous to my dog? Are they dangerous to me? Should I rip that thing off and burn it?

Edit: Forgot to mention, my dog is an American bully. He got bit in the neck by a big dog when he was a puppy and now has scar tissue in his throat (so I'm told) so he has trouble breathing anyway. He snorts any time he takes a deep breathe, he sounds just like a pig. He overheats very easy on hot summer days, which he often starts wheezing. This is probably another reason to worry if the collars are dangerous.
