How can I help my cat adjust to my new dog?

I’m not sure where to post this but I wanted to reach out to a community with a lot of traffic hoping to find some answers.

If anyone has any tips on a better community to share this in please let me know.

So the story is this:

I got my cat as a young kitten. She got along fine with the dog I had at the time, though I wouldn’t say they were friends. They mostly avoided one another except when my dog would give her a lick or something. When my cat was 1 year old my dog passed away. Sometime after that I was dating a guy with a dog that tormented and attacked my cat over and over again every time they visited. Training wasn’t working. Eventually I had no choice but to break it off with the guy due to his dog’s behavior. Now, I am fostering with the intent to adopt a dog of my own. He is an amazing gentle dog. He had been curious of my cat but not threatening at all, and seems to understand she is afraid of him.

But my cat is terrified.

She has been on top of my refrigerator trembling for days. She won’t come down to eat or drink or even let me pet her.

I really like the dog and feel he will be a great fit with our family and lifestyle. And I intend to adopt him. IF my cat can make peace with it.

I know a lot more about training and behavior in dogs than I do in cats. What do I do here? Is it just a matter of waiting? Will she trust him eventually?

How can I help her?

I feel tremendously guilty that I’m even considering getting a dog when my poor cat is this afraid. But at the same time, I feel like this dog deserves a loving family if we can make it work!

Thank you so so much.
