New kitten living in loft apartment

I just got a rescue kitten (She was in a colony, and we got her at 8 weeks old) and I've been keeping her in the bathroom outside of times when I'm at home and can supervise her. I want to start letting her roam the apartment a bit more, but I'd have to keep her upstairs since my dog is still getting used to her and there is no chance in hell I'd let him near her without me holding her or him on his leash. I have a pretty high-up loft apartment with wide rails. I have a rail guard on, but it's only really successful for my dog since he's to big to fight through the tight spaces I couldn't keep guarded. But she's extremely tiny (runt of the litter) and can fit through. I'm worried about her falling off the railing since she's clumsy and has already fallen off my bed a few times.
What should I do about this, and how do I introduce her to the railing in a safe way?
