My boyfriend and I are adopting a cat in the coming couple of months. I am so excited I can barely stand it, I have so much love to give to this animal god damn it and I am going to make sure they have the best, longest life I can provide. This is my first time owning a cat, and first time owning a pet by myself(though I have pet sit, and worked in a vet clinic as a kennel tech before). I've wanted this cat since I was 12 lmao.
The question is, do I get an adult cat or two kittens? I've listed pros and cons for each that I can think of. The reason why I would not just get one kitten is because I've read that solo kittens are more likely to have social issues and urinate outside of litter box.
Kitten pros:
-More fun having two cats
-They may bond with each other
-I get to raise them, which means conditioning them early on to be comfortable with me handling them, trimming nails, teeth brushing, ear cleaning etc. *(this is the main reason for considering getting a kitten)
-They keep each other company
-Kittens learn from each other (social, playing, litter box)
Kitten Cons:
-Twice the amount of trouble, expense, and work.
-bigger undertaking for first time owning a cat.
Adult Cat pros:
-Fully formed personality - less surprises
-Adult cats have more likely been in shelter system longer
-Adult cats need someone to adopt them
Adult Cat Cons
-more difficult to break negative habits if they exist, such as clawing furniture, not using litter box
-more difficult to form trust in order to trim nails, brush teeth etc if cat isn't already mellow
-may be harder to gain trust of a cat that has been in shelter for a long time, unsure of past environments

Oh also our living situation:
We live together in a two bedroom apartment. Landlord is okay with pets. Apartment is spacious enough for two cats. Any cat we get will be indoor only.
We might build a Catio on the back porch. :')
