My 12 yo mix dog often has discharge from his eyes and when I wipe it, it appears brown. I'm not sure if it comes out brown or if it's just from the dust and dirt he encounters. His nictitating eyelids are always showing as well but they don't appear swollen or agitated.
I'm wondering if this is something I need to take him to a vet for or if it's treatable with over the counter medicine.
I try to wipe his face with unscented baby wipes (since I can't wash it when I bathe him) but he hates that ( I don't get close to his eyes, just the area under where the discharge gathers) and the wipes don't work against an especially stubborn glob of eye discharge that seems stuck in his fur.
