My little one is spoiled. I try to take great care of her. However, I did not know you have to regularly brush their teeth. I feed her dry food (not just dry food, but it makes up most of her diet), and for some reason I believed it was abrasive enough to keep her teeth clean. I took her in to the vet about a month ago for something unrelated. They informed me that she had periodontal disease. However, she cannot have them cleaned. They advocated against this, and I agree. Any anesthetic could cause stress to her enlarged heart, and may result in death. I am not willing to risk it. They suggested I get get Greenies. I've done that, but they're a bit big for her to chew on. She does not like them and has trouble eating them. Remember, she is small (and so is her mouth). I then got a small kitty toothbrush, and tried gently brushing with some water. I could tell it was painful for her, and I was being as gentle as possible. She was well behaved. She kept her mouth open. But as soon as I made contact with her tooth, she objected. I feel she is in pain. I want to help her. Her back teeth are covered in tartar. So... what can I do? I know that gum disease results in pain and tooth loss. I want her to be as healthy and happy as possible. Does anyone here have suggestions? A professional cleaning is not an option...
