Hi.So my cat is difficult. He's about 20 years old, has definite cognitive decline, is completely deaf, starting to go blind, is hyperthyroidal, has some arthritis, and also basically a bit of a jerk. On medication to manage his thyroid and pain levels. He's also a total nightmare to be with, just really super-vocal, routine-obsessed, and loud. My god is he loud. Pretty common that people think I have a screaming baby in the room.
I've had him for about a decade, but my situation's changed a bit lately, too. I mean, he was really my ex's cat, and 6 months ago I had to move to a smaller apartment, where there's honestly less to stimulate him. No more backyard to look out on and play in, and it's inner-city so there's no birds or wildlife dropping by either. He's always been a bit loud and difficult, but the last few years it's really gotten worse.
We're not getting along. And he's getting weirder and weirder (the latest thing is refusing to drink unless he sees me pour him a fresh bowl of water, drinking, then screaming about the big drink he had for a few minutes. Great.)
Not trying to shirk the responsibility of animal ownership, but has anyone got any advice for how we can get along?
Lately I've found myself researching cat behaviour training (though it's honestly a little late for that imo), how to rehome cats, and euthanasia, honestly. A few people close to me reckon he's led a long life and he's only going to get worse so it's probably time. Not sure I'm convinced of that yet really, but I do think if I were to surrender him there's almost no way anyone would adopt him, and he'd just be put down anyway.
Anyway, right now his voice is raspy because he's been yowling so much it's gotten hoarse. Taken him to the vet a bunch of times lately, but (apart from the long laundry list of problems he has) they always say "wow he's in great shape for such an old cat!".
Honestly though, I can't wait for him to just pass away in his sleep.
