I had an extremely traumatic thing happen to me 3 years ago. Ever since, I've had a very difficult time being alone and get into really depressive phases when he's not with me and am overall very anxious in general. I currently don't really have anyone in my life (friends, family, SO) since I moved to a new state about a year ago for a huge opportunity. Unfortunately lockdown happened and my mental health has really taken a dive. The only thing that has really helped me get it together and keep my job was my Shiba.
Recently, I had to fly to my home state to see my family because my mom was assaulted and I really wanted to be there for her. I checked all the airlines flying to my home state and none of them are accepting pets in cargo because of coronavirus and he's too big for the cabin (I tried my luck as he was barely 23 lbs and fit the sturdibag L but the gate agent told me no and I had to turn around and go home and reschedule my flight). I ended up finding a dog sitter to watch him for a few weeks.
For the past week and a half I felt my work really slipping while working from home as all my family members are essential workers and are gone for most of the day. Today, I ended up getting a panic attack because my trauma happened in my home and I kept thinking about it and ended up taking a walk for 2 hours.
I've read all the hate for ESA dogs on reddit and in the news, and didn't want to be "that guy" who faked a need. I know I don't have blindness or something extreme like schizophrenia, so I just wanted to know if you guys think that I should ask my therapist for an ESA letter or if it would be too insensitive.
I'm also slightly worried because since it is a Shiba, he's not very well trained to cater to my emotions. He's fantastic when at home, and is always by my side, but when I walk him he's so curious and wants to explore and pulls his leash. He also marks whenever he smells dog urine, but other than that never peed in my home before. I feel like if I can't bring him again
Do you guys think my case would be ok enough to ask for an ESA letter? Thanks for reading thus far.
