I’m having a hard time deciding which pet would be best for me to get, so I came here for some advice

I’m looking to get a new pet, but I’ve only ever taken care of dogs so I’m not sure what I’m getting into. I’d be interested in owning something along the lines of a reptile or any aquatic animal (fish or otherwise), but not necessarily a mammal. I want to switch it up a bit, and I’d like to further my experience as I’m interested in studying zoology.

Now for a little info about my conditions to save us all some time: I’m currently in high school and therefore busy all day, but after 5 PM during the week I’ll be free aside from my other hobbies. During the weekend I have a few hours of work, but nothing extensive. I live in California, and the only animal I would be scared of handling is an arachnid. Speaking of handling, I want to be able to interact with my pet without stressing it out too much or hurting it. I get that it’s hard to be “hands on” with fish but I’m still interested. That is all. Thanks for reading, and if you have any tips I’d love to hear them so that my decision is the right one.
