I have a cat, that’s both an inside and an outside cat. During summer she rarely wants to come inside, but during winter she hangs out inside and only goes out for a bathroom break and if the weather is nice she’ll roam around a bit.
I’ve been thinking of adopting a dog, but I’m very worried about how the cat will handle it. I’ve heard that cat, female cats especially, tend to get very offended and will run away if they feel someone else is threatening their territory, and since she has a lot of access to outside, I’m afraid that’s going to happen in this case. There are several cats that show up to our property, and she always tries to fight them to leave (usually they win and then she lays down a few meters away and pretenda nothing happened), so I’m skeptical she’d get along with a new dog.
Do you think I should just give up the idea of getting a dog, or are there ways to make them meet in a safe environment (in that case, where and how) and to avoid the cat running away? Do any of you have similar experiences?
TLTR: My outside cat doesn’t seem to be very friendly towards other animals, is there any hope I can successfully introduce her to a new dog without her running away?
