Is playing a sound my cat is scared by when he scratches the couch harmful to him?

I can’t get him to stop scratching the couch and it’s destroyed. I want to get a new one, but not if he’s going to destroy it. In casual conversation today a friend mentioned sound conditioning - and openly said she knows nothing about it - and playing a sound he doesn’t like when he does it. He gets scared when people first come over, so immediately I thought of a doorbell sound. I did it once, he stopped and looked around and went and did something else. This last time he trotted down the hall to my room, his safe cave. That made me feel bad, even though he comes out like two or three minutes after people first come I.

I want to make sure this isn’t psychologically damaging to him. I don’t want him hiding in my room scared, and I don’t know how long it would take for him to associate scratching with the sound. Orrr he just gets used to the sound and nothing happening and it becomes useless.
