May have to surrender our cat due to behaviour change

Hey everyone,

my parents are unfortunately looking at giving up our family cat due to recent behaviour changes. She’s always been a playful cat, who would swipe and scratch without trying to actually hurt. In the last few months though, she’s become more vicious, hissing at family members without provocation, and even jumping on my moms head and attacking her, which ended in a visit to the Emergency Room.

My parents are at the end of their rope, and quite frankly I can’t blame them. They’ve tried giving her her own space (the basement), sedative treats to calm her down, even keeping small water guns or spray bottles around the house to fend her off if she corners them. Unfortunately though, her behaviour is getting worse, and she is beginning to attack them more frequently, with even less warning.

Does anyone have any advice on what could help a cat acting like this? We took her to a vet, and while he didn’t run any tests apart from giving her shots and asking questions, he did say it was likely a behavioural change, and would not be reversible, only somewhat treatable with sedative food options.

Looking for any advice, and sorry for the word block, thanks.
