I’ve been a dog person my whole life and I decided to get a cat because I would be living in an apartment for the foreseeable future. I shopped around for a while and I found this beautiful little long-haired Kitten that was frightened out of its mind in the cage. I couldn’t even get the chance to pick her up because she would scratch me just by reaching my hands. I was convinced by the helper to adopt her because I’m told that she’ll be beautiful and I think I can break her in.
8 months in and it’s like living with a log. She’ll follow me around but won’t let me pet her. If I pet her anytime she doesn’t like it she’ll quickly bite my hand. The only toy she likes is the laser pointer because she has an active target to hunt. I got her at 14 weeks as a stray with so maybe she a hunter cat and nothing more. (I figure out later her whiskers on one side are clipped so she may have been abused or something)
Worst of it all is she’s a Siberian long hair cat meaning I have to brush her everyday which doesn’t help our fragile relationship. She growls at me while I do her lower back and loud when i go anywhere near her legs. She’s lazy and does do maintaining herself that much. I figured out recently I can do it when she’s napping but I’ll still quickly get bit if I do it in the wrong spot. I’ve already had to take her to the vet for mats on her hind legs.
Maybe her behavior wouldn’t be such a big deal if I didn’t have to touch her every day. Is this just the worst possible scenario I could’ve gotten for my first cat? I have been thinking of returning her and finding a good home because I may not be cut out for this. I am a dog person and but off more than I could chew. I wanted a cuddly cat to love on
The only positives are she is affectionate when I walk in the door for about two or three minutes. And she does follow me around which is cute.
Help would be nice.
